Welcome

to the website of the Brighton Medico-Chirurgical Society. The Society was founded in 1847 by Dr William King and is one of the older medical societies in the UK. It was set up to enable members of the medical profession to meet regularly for educational and social purposes.

Read more about its history and organisation.

The 2010 programme is available on the meetings page and there is information about the speakers on the speakers page.

The Current President

Mr Bob Tranter

The President for the year 2010 is Mr Bob Tranter.

"It is a great honour and privilege to be the president of the Brighton and Sussex Medico-Chirurgical Society for the year 2010. I have invited a selection of talented speakers and they are either friends, colleagues, or patients and some of them all three! As well as medical speakers I have invited a well known politician, Bob Marshall-Andrews, international opera singer Dame Felicity Lott and Victor Spinetti, National Treasure of the English Stage. We have been fortunate to obtain support from many local and national organisations. Some of our meetings will be held jointly with organisations such as the Brighton and Hove Hospital Friends, the Sussex Association of Consultants and the BMA. I look forward to your support in the year 2010 and if you are not already a member of this ancient society why not join immediately and enjoy the 2010 programme."

Meetings

The Society's meetings are usually held on the first Thursday of each month. As has been the tradition since 1847, speakers from all walks of life are invited to address the Society. The meetings are held in the Education Centre in the new Audrey Emerton Building on the Royal Sussex County Hospital site or in the Brighton and Sussex Medical School at the University of Sussex at Falmer. Maps for both venues are available. The Society is grateful to the Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals Trust for providing us with office space and a meeting venue.
